Learn how to build scenes, entities, actions, events, and changing story worlds.

πŸ› οΈ The QnS Builder Tools

The QnS Builder Tools are designed to help you stay focused on creating great adventures, not hunting through menus or repeating the same tasks over and over.

Everything you need to build your world is close at hand. You can create and edit entities, design scenes, build puzzles, write conversations, and fine-tune events without interrupting your creative flow.

One of the biggest advantages of the QnS engine is that building and playing happen together. As your adventure grows, you can immediately step into your world, experience your latest changes, and continue refining them. Whether you're adjusting a character's behavior, experimenting with different story paths, or polishing a puzzle, the builder gives you the tools to quickly recreate scenarios and see the results.

Creating an interactive adventure is a bit like directing a movie. You're constantly shaping scenes, guiding characters, adjusting the action, and watching your story come to life. The QnS Builder Tools are designed to make that creative process as smooth, enjoyable, and flexible as possible; from your opening scene to your final chapter. 🎬

πŸ•ΉοΈ Play as you build

One of the best ways to create a great adventure is to play it as you build it.

The QnS engine lets you experience your story exactly as your players will. You can explore your world, enter commands, solve puzzles, and watch your actions and events unfold in real time.

As you play, your editing tools are always close at hand. Make a change, test it immediately, adjust a few states, jump to a reset point, or tweak an event then continue playing without losing your momentum.

The QnS engine also tracks everything happening during your play session, including the player's location, inventory, entity and scene states, and other runtime information. Combined with testing tools like reset points and state editing, it's easy to recreate specific situations, refine puzzles, and experiment with different story paths.

One of the most enjoyable parts of building interactive fiction is discovering unexpected interactions. Try giving players unusual items, changing the order of events, or putting characters into situations you hadn't originally planned. You may discover ideas that make your story even more memorable.

🎯 Builder Tip: Don't just test the intended path through your adventure. Experiment! Some of the best puzzles, jokes, and story moments come from trying something you never expected to work.

πŸ§ͺ Develop, Test, and Refine Your Scenarios

The QnS engine is designed to make it easy to build a scenario, try it out, make changes, and jump right back in.

Instead of replaying your entire adventure every time you want to test one moment, you can use builder tools to quickly set up the exact situation you want to work on.

You can:

  • πŸ“ Create reset points so you can return to an important part of your story again and again.
  • βš™οΈ Adjust the states of entities and scenes to recreate specific situations.
  • πŸŽ’ Set up the player with the items, conditions, or progress needed for a particular scenario.
  • πŸšͺ Place the player directly in the scene you want to test.
  • πŸ”„ Reset and replay interactions as you refine actions, events, messages, images, and outcomes.
  • 🎭 Try different combinations of states to see how your world responds.

This makes it much easier to focus on individual puzzles, conversations, encounters, and story moments without having to repeatedly play through everything that comes before them.

As you refine a scenario, you can experiment with different conditions, responses, images, and outcomes until the interaction feels exactly the way you want.

πŸ› οΈ Builder Tip: Create reset points around important puzzles, conversations, or branching moments. They give you a convenient starting place for experimenting with different versions of the same scenario.

πŸ“ Reset Points

πŸ“ Reset Points are designed to make testing and refining your adventure much faster.

Many story moments need to be tested multiple times. A player might uncover a hidden clue, discover a secret object, or make a different choice that leads to a new outcome. Rather than replaying your entire adventure each time, you can create a Reset Point and return to it whenever you want to test another possibility.

When you return to a Reset Point, the player's progress is restored to exactly how it was when the Reset Point was created. This includes the player's inventory, as well as the states of entities and scenes.

🏷️ Every Reset Point can be given a title. By default, the title is based on what the player is doing at the time the Reset Point is created.

πŸ’‘ Builder Tip: Give your Reset Points names that describe what you're testing, such as "Magic Door Puzzle" or "Guard Conversation". Descriptive names make it much easier to find the right Reset Point later.
ℹ️ Note: Going to a Reset Point, resetting the current scene, or resetting the current chapter automatically removes any Reset Points that were created after that point.
